VP of Underwriting

This senior leadership role is responsible for driving underwriting excellence across a high-volume mortgage lending operation, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and efficiency throughout the loan decisioning process. The position plays a critical role in maintaining service level agreements while supporting complex loan scenarios and escalations across conventional and government loan products. You will lead underwriting teams, strengthen operational consistency, and act as a key decision-maker for second-level reviews and high-complexity cases. Working closely with operations, sales, and senior leadership, you will help balance risk management with production goals in a fast-paced, performance-driven environment. This role combines strategic oversight with hands-on problem solving, coaching, and process optimization. It is ideal for a leader who thrives in high-volume lending environments and is passionate about building strong, compliant, and high-performing underwriting teams.

Accountabilities:

Lead underwriting operations across conventional, FHA, VA, and other government loan products, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and consistency in credit decisions.
Oversee underwriting pipelines to ensure adherence to service level agreements, production goals, and quality standards.
Provide final decision support and second-level review for complex loans, escalations, and high-risk scenarios.
Mentor, coach, and develop underwriting staff, supporting both individual performance and overall team capability.
Collaborate with branch, sales, and operations teams to resolve loan-level issues and ensure smooth end-to-end execution.
Manage underwriting reporting, performance tracking, and bonus structures for the department.
Support special projects, training initiatives, and process improvements led by underwriting leadership.
Ensure strong communication across stakeholders to maintain high levels of customer service and operational alignment.

Requirements:

5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience across FHA, VA, USDA, and conventional loan products with strong agency guideline expertise.
3+ years of underwriting management or leadership experience in a high-volume lending environment.
Direct Endorsement (DE) status from HUD and/or VA SAR authority strongly preferred.
Deep understanding of FHA, VA, and conventional underwriting guidelines, ATR/QM requirements, and compliance standards.
Strong ability to analyze complex credit scenarios and make sound, risk-based decisions.
Proven leadership skills with experience mentoring, coaching, and managing underwriting teams.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools; experience with Encompass LOS is a plus.
Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills in a fast-paced environment.
