This executive finance role offers the opportunity to drive strategic impact across a mission-driven organization focused on higher education. The Vice President, Finance & Portfolio Support will lead enterprise finance functions including Accounting, Financial Planning & Analysis, Procurement, and Portfolio Management, ensuring operational excellence, transparency, and alignment across programs. This position requires a visionary yet hands-on leader who can translate strategy into actionable plans, support cross-functional teams, and provide data-informed insights to guide decision-making. Working in a virtual-first environment, the role contributes directly to the sustainability and growth of initiatives that positively impact students and higher education institutions nationwide.

Accountabilities:

  • Serve as a strategic business partner to the executive team, advancing organizational goals and mission.
  • Lead critical enterprise finance functions, including Accounting, FP&A, Procurement, and Portfolio Management Office.
  • Ensure financial sustainability, operational excellence, and cross-functional alignment of resources and programs.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes with accuracy, transparency, and timeliness.
  • Provide actionable, data-driven insights and present complex financial information in accessible terms to executive leadership and boards.
  • Drive process improvements, technology upgrades, and transformation initiatives across finance and portfolio operations.
  • Manage, coach, and develop high-performing, inclusive teams across multiple finance disciplines.
  • Support organizational change with clarity, empathy, and a proactive approach to strategic challenges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field; advanced degree (MBA or CPA) preferred.
  • 15+ years of progressively responsible finance and accounting leadership experience.
  • Proven experience in financial planning & analysis, accounting operations (GL, AP, AR, Payroll), procurement, and financial systems integration.
  • Strong strategic thinking with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans.
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to present complex topics clearly and persuasively to executive audiences.
  • Demonstrated leadership in motivating teams, coaching leaders, and building high-performing inclusive environments.
  • Experience with nonprofit compliance, reporting, and global or multi-entity finance operations is highly desirable.
  • Track record in ERP or financial systems implementation and process improvement initiatives.
  • High level of integrity, judgment, and discretion managing confidential or sensitive information.
  • Willingness to travel for biannual organizational retreats.
