This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Underwriting Large Case Specialist based in United States.

This is a fully remote senior-level opportunity for an expert in individual life underwriting and complex financial risk assessment.
You will serve as a technical authority on high-value and high-net-worth cases, making sophisticated decisions within your underwriting authority.
The role combines advanced risk evaluation, financial underwriting, reinsurance expertise, and consultative partnership with distribution and field leaders.
You will troubleshoot escalated cases, evaluate appeals, and help ensure underwriting decisions remain competitive, customer-focused, consistent, and compliant.
The position also offers the opportunity to influence how modern underwriting technologies are incorporated into everyday workflows.
You will mentor fellow underwriters and share industry insights while helping strengthen underwriting standards and decision-making practices.
Success requires sound judgment, autonomy, strong communication, and the ability to navigate complex cases with confidence and precision.

Accountabilities:
  • Act as a senior technical authority for large-case and financial underwriting, adjudicating highly complex and high-value individual life cases while balancing competitive offers, mortality protection, product expectations, and established underwriting guidelines.
  • Review complex appeals, reference cases, and reinsurance submissions, ensuring decisions are well-supported, consistent, and aligned with applicable risk standards.
  • Provide expert judgment on escalated underwriting issues, troubleshooting challenging cases and serving as a resource for underwriters, managers, and other stakeholders.
  • Evaluate complex financial information, including financial statements, tax returns, and other documentation, to support sophisticated risk assessments.
  • Apply advanced reinsurance knowledge, including interpretation of treaty language, retention limits, and automatic and facultative reinsurance requirements, while collaborating with reinsurance partners when needed.
  • Work closely with field partners, distribution leaders, agencies, and home-office teams to gather information, resolve issues, negotiate appeals, and communicate underwriting decisions professionally and effectively.
  • Serve as a trusted consultative partner to distribution and field leadership, providing responsive guidance that supports case placement, strengthens relationships, and improves the experience for producers and customers.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of underwriting guidelines, risk assessment methodologies, regulatory requirements, and evolving industry practices to promote compliant and consistent decision-making.
  • Champion the adoption and effective integration of modern underwriting technologies, including electronic health records, generative AI, wearable technology, and other emerging tools.
  • Mentor, train, and guide underwriters in advanced financial underwriting practices, helping elevate technical capabilities and decision quality across the team.
  • Monitor developments across the life insurance and underwriting landscape and share relevant insights to inform prudent business and risk decisions.

Requirements:

  • 15–20+ years of experience in individual life underwriting, with substantial depth in complex and large-case risk assessment.
  • Proven experience underwriting large and high-value cases, particularly for high-net-worth applicants.
  • Deep expertise in individual life underwriting, including complex financial underwriting and significant underwriting authority.
  • Demonstrated experience working within reinsurance frameworks, including treaty interpretation, retention limits, automatic and facultative reinsurance, and collaboration with reinsurance underwriters.
  • Strong ability to analyze complex financial documentation such as financial statements, tax returns, and related information.
  • Industry-recognized education or professional credentials such as FALU, FLMI, or comparable qualifications.
  • Familiarity with emerging underwriting technologies, including electronic health records, generative AI, and wearable technology, as well as an understanding of behavioral economics concepts.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to adapt established approaches and develop innovative solutions for complex situations.
  • Ability to work independently and confidently while exercising sound judgment within assigned approval authority.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence peers, collaborate across functions, and communicate complex underwriting decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong relationship-building and consultative skills, particularly when working with distribution leaders, field partners, agencies, and senior stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and develop colleagues while contributing to a culture of high technical standards and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to travel occasionally, with travel expected to be less than 10%.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship.

Benefits:

  • Fully remote position within the United States.
  • Full-time employment with a base salary range of $110,350–$181,285 USD, with final compensation determined by education, experience, knowledge, abilities, and primary work location.
  • Potential eligibility for annual, sales, or other incentive compensation in addition to base salary.
  • Comprehensive and flexible benefits and resources designed to support physical, financial, and overall well-being.
  • Opportunities for skill-building, leadership development, and career growth.
  • Access to professional development and opportunities to contribute to community and philanthropic initiatives.
  • Supportive and inclusive workplace culture focused on high ethical standards and employee well-being.
  • Reasonable workplace and application accommodations available for qualified individuals with disabilities and other eligible needs.
