The Underwriter 1 plays a crucial role in assessing risks and determining the profitability of insurance policies. An Underwriter 1 will demonstrate proficiency in risk evaluation, selection, and retention of profitable businesses within assigned authority limits. They should be licensed and understand the personal lines and auto insurance space, emphasizing underwriting and risk selection. This position will support operations, claims, and other cross-functional teams.
Consistently meet set KPI and push towards stretch KPIs
Maintain a minimum quality score of 95%
Carefully select and underwrite risks in accordance with statutory and company requirements/guidelines to ensure profitability and business targets are met
Reviewing submissions, endorsements, inspection, and renewal reviews within the assigned level of authority
Escalating to Sr/Executive Underwriters based on authority levels
Processing of policy changes or updates, both internal and external-customer-facing
Provide mentorship, support, and guidance within and across teams
Follow policies from new businesses through the life cycle of the policy
Retention task force with cross-collaboration teams
Collaborate with the team to develop new ways to evaluate risk and identify ways to improve customer workflows and automation.
Work closely with operations management on de-escalations and negative reviews
May be asked to collaborate with senior team members on ad hoc projects
Additional tasks and responsibilities may change depending on company procedure updates, automation, new product launches, and business needs
3 to 5 years of prior underwriting experience in auto and personal lines
Ability to work independently with minimal structure and oversight
Superior customer service and interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers in an efficient, empathetic, and respectful manner
Driven to improve performance and efficiency
Develop skills in tactful de-escalation techniques and autonomous decision-making
Business acumen to make sensible and intelligent decisions that help Kin’s profitability, driving customer retention
Has an understanding of how customer behavior impacts the propensity for loss
Ability to work in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment with limited structure
Ability to context switch seamlessly between tasks as priority and team needs dictate
Proficient in Google Suite or similar tools and capable of navigating multiple tools and windows at the same time
A need for high efficiency, always looking for ways to improve processes and customer experience
Business acumen to make sensible and intelligent decisions that help Kin’s profitability, driving customer retention
Ability to switch seamlessly between tasks as a priority and the team's needs
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
A bilingual Spanish speaker is a plus, but optional
Umbrella or high net worth personal lines underwriting experience
