As part of our strategic focus on specialized risk practices, we are seeking a Technical Director to lead our national property risk management strategy. This position can be filled remotely and carries a national scope, making it ideal for a seasoned professional with deep expertise in property risk management, including fire protection, natural hazard mitigation, builders risk, equipment breakdown, and specific occupancy exposures. The role is designed for a leader who brings strategic vision and a passion for advancing technical excellence across our property portfolio.

The successful candidate will be a recognized authority in property exposures, with a strong background in multi-line commercial insurance and a demonstrated ability to influence underwriting strategy, claims handling, and technical direction. This role will serve as a national resource, providing expert consultation to underwriting, claims, and field risk management teams, while also representing Nationwide in industry forums, client engagements, and thought leadership initiatives.

We are seeking individuals with strong credentials—such as PE, CFPS, ARM, CSP, or other relevant certifications—and a proven track record of thought leadership, technical innovation, and collaborative impact. Experience in property risk assessments, fire protection engineering, building systems, and regulatory compliance is highly valued. The ability to translate complex technical and environmental risks into actionable strategies that support profitable growth and retention is essential.

Job Description Summary

The Technical Director for Risk Management is responsible for developing and executing strategic plans for specific line(s) of business from a risk management perspective that drives profitable growth and portfolio mix across the entire CLESS organization. This role involves developing policies, procedures, standards, directing strategy implementation, and providing technical expert consulting for their line of business. Portfolio management and market trend analysis will be key to providing a broader strategic impact.

This role will offer expertise on regulatory issues, specific risks, risk improvement initiatives, business projects, agency relationships and report optimization. The role also will provide high-level technical and risk management services to our field organization, underwriting, agents, and our customers through consultation, training and educational development resources for their line of business.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and Execute Risk Strategies: Design and implement risk management strategies tailored to specific lines of business, ensuring alignment with the company’s risk appetite across all CLESS business units.

  • Lead Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth portfolio reviews and market trend analyses for the assigned line of business, evaluating the broader impact on internal stakeholders and business partners.

  • Deliver Technical Expertise: Provide expert evaluations and strategic recommendations for specialized risk management opportunities, including innovative business models and operational enhancements.

  • Drive Growth and Profitability: Collaborate with Industry Practice Underwriting Leaders, Line of Business Underwriting Leaders, and Risk Management Industry Leaders to support account expansion and profitability.

  • Enhance Service Delivery: Partner with the RMCS National Field Organization to improve client service experience and satisfaction.

  • Support Quality Assurance: Contribute to the QA process and help develop line-of-business-specific risk management guidelines and best practices.

  • Maintain Technical Proficiency: Stay current on regulatory changes, industry trends, technical innovations, and continuing education relevant to the assigned line of business.

  • Advance Tools and Services: Work with the RMCS Capabilities team to maintain and enhance tools and services from a line-of-business perspective.

  • Provide High-Level Consultation: Deliver advanced technical support and risk management services to individual policyholders as needed.

  • Promote Thought Leadership: Create and share externally facing content—such as presentations, articles, and guidance—that supports industry initiatives from a line-of-business viewpoint.

May perform other responsibilities as assigned. 

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Associate Vice President, Technical Specialization & Consultative Services

Typical Skills and Experiences: 

Education: Bachelor's degree or post-graduate studies preferred

Licenses/Certifications/Designations: Relevant professional certifications/licenses (i.e. CSP, ARM, PE, CFPS, CPCU, CIH, CRM).

Experience:  Minimum of ten years of experience in commercial risk management with expertise from a line of business perspective.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Extensive knowledge of insurance products, safety, and risk management concepts.  Strong organizational and relationship-building skills. Thorough understanding of risk management principles and property/casualty products. Ability to monitor industry conditions and communicate effectively with business partners. Proven ability to oversee portfolio management and drive technical direction for line of business. Additional skills needed include Strategic Planning, Organizational Capabilities, Analytical Thinking, Technical Leadership, Influencing, Collaboration, and Communication.

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resource Business Partner.

Working Conditions: A valid driver's license and a safe driving record are required.  Requires regular travel up to 35%.
