Against that backdrop, we are seeking an accomplished executive to join our team and lead our Specialty Business. In this critical and highly visible role, you will work closely with the President of the Insurance Segment and his leadership team to deliver on all financial and performance goals for the lines of business comprising the Specialty Business, which include Dental, Vision, Medicare Supplement (Med Supp) and Prescription Drug Plans (PDP). Success in the role will not only directly impact the enterprise and all associates, it will directly impact the health and well-being of millions of members across the nation.

The SVP & President of Specialty will report directly to the President, Insurance Segment and will lead a team of currently 12 direct reports and XX associates within the line of business.

As the leader for Humana’s Specialty Businesses, this position has P&L, business strategy, sales distribution and provider network responsibility for all current Specialty products (Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, and Wellness), PDP and Med Supp, as well as any future Specialty products that may be developed and marketed. The team supports Commercial, Medicare and Medicaid business, including Specialty products that are sold to both Group and Individual customers. This leader will have responsibility for managing relationships with internal partners who support these lines of business, as well as external vendors who provide support.

               

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead industry, market and competitive research and analysis to inform and shape recommendations 
  • Foster highly productive working relationships that enable close collaboration with Humana’s Insurance Segment Leadership Team as well as key corporate, functional, and business unit leaders 
  • Recruit and retain top talent, strengthen overall team performance, and prepare team members for roles of increased responsibility
  • Responsible for evaluating actual and projected Specialty, PDP and Med Supp growth and profitability for Humana and the industry, assessing potential sources of growth, designing strategies to meet or exceed growth/profitability objectives and working with market leaders to implement key strategies.
  • Design and execute compliant Provider contracting/management strategies to maintain market-competitive networks to support profitable growth for dental and vision products.
  • Evaluate variation in performance across competitors and markets to uncover sources of opportunity to drive additional growth, and also to anticipate potential drivers of disruption.
  • Develop partnerships and offerings to propel growth and enterprise value across PDP, Med Supp, Vision, Dental, Disability, Life and Wellness offerings by identifying with the market sales team, brokers and employer groups the competitive offerings needed and work across Group and Individual product, underwriting / actuarial and other matrix partners to implement to support growth targets.
  • Oversee the Specialty Distribution team to drive market strategy, evaluate opportunities to expand geographically and eliminate roadblocks
  • Partner closely with the Product leadership to identify and communicate the need for improvements and changes in Humana’s products and services.

Scale and Impact:

This role will oversee a Specialty business that supports membership with more than 15 million lines of coverage across the current Specialty products portfolio.  Total revenue (including MSB) for these lines of business is approximately $3.1B, with a pretax of over $100m dollars.

The leader will manage a team of approximately 12 direct reports and about 300 total associates responsible for the Specialty, PDP and Med Supp business strategies and P&L results, sales distribution, marketing strategy, product design/innovation and geographic expansion, provider network contracting/credentialing and maintenance, and managing Specialty internal and external business partner relationships.   This position will report to the Insurance Segment President.

Key Candidate Qualifications 

The ideal candidate will have deep experience in the Insurance industry, with a proven track record of hitting financial targets established by the enterprise and growing the business and contributing to the growth of other lines of business on an annual basis.  Finally, this person will be a strong leader of people with proven success in expanding and elevating the capabilities and performance of the team. 

In addition to the above, the following professional qualifications and personal attributes are also sought: 

  • Well-developed and broad knowledge of the healthcare ecosystem, with a track record of identifying industry, market, and competitor trends to offer insightful implications for the greater business 
  • Proven ability to build high-performing teams by identifying, cultivating, and motivating top talent from inside and outside of the organization  
  • A proven thought leader who drives a future-focused agenda, helps advance organizational thinking about our specialty businesses, works with business units to build strategies from present to future state, and anticipates changes and disruption to see opportunities for the future 
  • Ability to work through tumultuous or ambiguous scenarios successfully. 
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the polish, poise, and executive presence that will ensure effective interaction with senior and executive level audiences  
  • Current or recent experience in a large, highly matrixed company (i.e., Fortune 150), with proven ability to influence leaders and key stakeholders in such an environment   
  • Highly collaborative mindset and excellent relationship-building skills, including the ability to engage many diverse stakeholders and SMEs and win their co-ownership in the outcome  
  • Current or recent experience in the healthcare or insurance industry leadership role is highly desirable, but not required 
  • Bachelor’s degree is required.  Advanced degree (MBA) preferred
