This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Supervisor, Underwriting - Commercial Lines (Middle Market) in United States.

This leadership role sits within a dynamic commercial insurance underwriting environment focused on delivering tailored solutions for middle market clients. The Supervisor is responsible for leading and developing a team of underwriters while ensuring high-quality underwriting decisions across new business, renewals, and endorsements. The role combines people leadership with technical underwriting expertise, supporting complex risk evaluations and ensuring alignment with company guidelines. It plays a key part in driving operational efficiency, portfolio profitability, and service excellence for agents and business partners. The position requires strong analytical skills, sound judgment, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment. Operating in a collaborative setting, the role also contributes to process improvement, training, and strategic underwriting initiatives.


Accountabilities:
  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of approximately 8–12 middle market underwriters, ensuring strong performance, engagement, and professional growth.
  • Review and underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsements across low to high exposure commercial risks within established authority levels.
  • Oversee workflow management, ensuring efficiency, accuracy, and compliance with underwriting standards and service level expectations.
  • Analyze complex risk submissions, agency books, and portfolio trends to recommend and implement underwriting actions that support profitability.
  • Coordinate and guide underwriting decisions, providing technical expertise and support for referral transactions and complex cases.
  • Strengthen relationships with agents and business partners through consistent communication, service excellence, and underwriting guidance.
  • Monitor underwriting quality, conduct audits, and ensure adherence to corporate policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead training, mentoring, and development initiatives to build team capability and support succession planning.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders across claims, sales, and operations to align underwriting decisions with business objectives.
  • Support operational reporting, performance tracking, and continuous improvement initiatives within the underwriting unit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of experience in commercial underwriting, preferably within middle market or commercial lines insurance.
  • Prior leadership or team supervision experience strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial underwriting principles, pricing, rating plans, and insurance regulations.
  • Experience working with underwriting systems, policy administration tools, and commercial insurance platforms.
  • Insurance designations such as AU, INS, CIC, or progress toward CPCU preferred.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills with the ability to assess complex risks.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities with internal teams and external partners.
  • Ability to lead, mentor, and develop team members in a performance-driven environment.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
