This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of Code for America. We are currently looking for a Staff UX Designer in the United States.
This role offers the opportunity to shape digital services that make a direct impact on how people access essential government and community programs. You will work within a multidisciplinary environment, partnering with designers, engineers, researchers, and policy experts to deliver inclusive, accessible, and human-centered solutions. With a focus on design systems and end-to-end user experience, you’ll help drive consistency, accessibility, and innovation across products. The role balances strategic leadership with hands-on design, ensuring services are both highly functional and respectful of the people they serve.
As a Staff UX Designer, you will play a dual role as both craft leader and strategic partner. You’ll define best practices, lead design system strategy, and set standards for respectful, accessible design. Key responsibilities include:
· Leading the planning, roadmap, and governance of a code-based design system, ensuring alignment across design, engineering, and product teams.
· Managing design system documentation, contribution workflows, versioning, and long-term maintenance models.
· Designing accessible and inclusive experiences from concept to delivery, while contributing to unified interaction patterns and design standards.
· Collaborating with researchers to conduct usability testing and incorporating findings into design improvements.
· Facilitating workshops, co-design sessions, and cross-functional collaboration to solve complex service design challenges.
· Providing mentorship to junior designers, raising the overall quality of design outputs, and fostering a culture of accessibility and excellence.
· Advocating for design in strategic discussions, engaging with clients, and integrating user-centered insights into broader policy and program decisions.
Requirements
The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in UX and design systems, with a proven ability to balance strategic vision and execution. Key requirements include:
· 6+ years of experience in product, interaction, or UX design, with a strong portfolio showcasing process and outcomes.
· Specialized expertise in managing or contributing to design systems at scale (3+ years).
· Proficiency with Figma, design tokens, component libraries, and documentation platforms (e.g., Storybook, GitHub).
· Strong understanding of accessibility principles (WCAG 2.1 AA), semantic HTML, and design-to-code handoff.
· Experience in agile development environments and iterative design practices.
· Ability to collaborate across disciplines, facilitate remote workshops, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
· Experience mentoring designers and leading small to medium projects from planning to delivery.
· Bonus: experience in civic tech, public sector design, or fluency in multiple languages.
Benefits
This role offers competitive compensation and a holistic benefits package designed to support your well-being and professional growth:
· Salary range: $128,945 – $157,850 annually (offer targets vary by market/location).
· Health coverage: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans with employer contributions for dependents.
