About Mighty Acorn

At Mighty Acorn, we make it easier for governments to deliver world-class digital services. From renewing a fishing license to applying for unemployment benefits, we build digital services that enhance public trust and satisfaction.

Our vision is a world where “good enough for government work” returns to its pedestal: fast, reliable, and frustration-free. We achieve this by empowering people, increasing transparency, breaking down silos, and moving together toward a shared goal.

Specializing in modern software development, DevSecOps, and scalable infrastructure, we focus on leveraging automation to manage complexity, accelerate transformation, shorten feedback loops, and reduce risk to build a world where government programs run reliably, smoothly, and efficiently.

While our team averages 10+ years of experience in the industry, we are a relatively new (formed in 2023) professional services company. Our government clients engage us to improve their digital products and services in a way that ensures better outcomes for their users and stakeholders. That means our clients hire us for our expertise, which we bill our time for.

Software Engineer IV - Frontend

At Mighty Acorn, Software Engineer IV is a senior-level role for engineers who bring deep expertise and the judgment to drive complex work forward with minimal oversight. For this role, that expertise is frontend development — specifically the craft of building accessible, well-structured web experiences that help government teams build consistently and confidently.

You'll be embedded on a team building and maintaining a design system and its documentation site for a government client. A design system is only as valuable as its documentation: if engineers and designers can't understand how to use a component correctly, the system fails. Your work will directly shape how the client's teams learn, adopt, and contribute to a growing library of components and patterns — making it easier for everyone across the agency to ship consistent, accessible digital services.

This is a fully remote position for a 3 month contracted position. Candidates must be based in and work from the contiguous United States, with at least a 5-hour overlap with 9am–5pm ET, Monday through Friday.

On a day to day basis, you will be responsible for:

  • Building and maintaining a design system documentation site built with Astro, including component pages, usage guidelines, and code examples.

  • Translating design specifications and component updates into clear, accurate documentation that developers and designers can rely on.

  • Collaborating with designers and engineers to keep documentation in sync as components and patterns evolve.

  • Reviewing and contributing to the design system's component library with a focus on accessibility compliance and semantic markup.

  • Participating in agile ceremonies — planning, standup, and retrospectives — and actively contributing to team-level problem solving.

  • Managing your own priorities in a distributed team, raising blockers early and communicating status clearly.

Must have technical skills:

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong frontend focus.

  • Deep proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React — able to write clean, semantic, accessible markup and understand how the web platform works beneath any framework.

  • Hands-on experience working with or implementing component-based design systems.

  • Experience with Astro or a comparable static site generator (Next.js, Eleventy, etc.).

  • Demonstrated knowledge of web accessibility standards (WCAG), including semantic HTML, ARIA usage, keyboard navigation, and screen reader behavior.

  • Experience implementing USWDS.

Must have nontechnical skills:

  • Strong written communication skills — able to produce clear, accurate documentation usable by both developers and designers.

  • Comfort collaborating across disciplines (design, engineering, product) and translating between them.

  • Ability to manage your own work in a distributed team with evolving requirements.

  • A Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) is contractually required for this role.

Nice to haves:

  • Familiarity with design tokens, theming systems, or multi-brand design system architectures.

  • Experience testing for accessibility using both manual testing and automated tooling (e.g., axe, Lighthouse, NVDA/VoiceOver).

  • Familiarity with reviewing component and token libraries in Figma dev mode.

  • Experience testing components using tools such as Chromatic, Playwright, Vitest, Jest, or Cypress.

  • Experience working with AWS, particularly AWS Amplify.

  • Experience working in or alongside government agencies or federal digital services programs.

Other requirements:

  • An ability to work efficiently, sometimes under tight deadlines.

  • A preference for transparency and an ability to be direct and transparent in your own communication.

  • An ability to adapt quickly and cope with temporarily ambiguous situations as requirements change.

  • This role requires work be performed from within the contiguous United States.

  • Candidates must either hold active US citizenship or a green card, and should possess work authorization that does not require any present or future visa sponsorship by Mighty Acorn Digital.

  • Candidates selected for the role must pass a criminal background check prior to their start date.

  • Candidates must have a fast (>100Mbps) and reliable internet connection and have a dedicated workspace with background noise at an appropriate level for audio calls.

If you don’t meet every requirement but believe you’d be great in this role, we’d love to hear from you! We’re committed to building diverse teams, and research shows that women and underrepresented groups often hesitate to apply unless they meet every qualification. Don't let that hold you back—let’s talk!

Further, we are not seeking partnerships with recruiters or agencies for this role, and unsolicited resumes will not be considered.
