Senior Python Backend Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Python Backend Engineer based in the United States.

This role offers the opportunity to work on highly impactful, cloud-native backend systems powering data-intensive applications in the healthcare and clinical research domain.
You will design and scale Python-based backend services that support complex, mission-critical workflows used in global clinical trial environments.
The position blends hands-on engineering with architectural leadership, requiring strong ownership of backend systems from design through production.
You will work with modern cloud infrastructure on AWS, building highly available and secure services using Kubernetes, serverless components, and microservices patterns.
This is a senior-level role where you will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders while mentoring engineers and driving technical excellence.
You will contribute directly to building reliable, scalable systems that improve how clinical data is processed and used worldwide.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will lead backend engineering efforts while ensuring scalable, secure, and high-performance system design and delivery.

Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs using Python and modern web frameworks
Architect and optimize PostgreSQL databases, ensuring performance, scalability, and data integrity
Build and manage AWS-based infrastructure including EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, and IAM
Define and enforce backend engineering standards, including API design, security practices, and testing strategies
Lead cloud-to-cloud integrations and implement secure authentication and authorization mechanisms (e.g., OAuth2)
Mentor and guide backend engineers through code reviews, best practices, and technical leadership
Collaborate in agile ceremonies and drive end-to-end delivery of backend features and systems
Ensure observability, reliability, and security of production systems through monitoring and proactive optimization

Requirements:

This role requires strong backend engineering expertise with deep experience in Python, cloud infrastructure, and scalable system design.

6+ years of backend engineering experience, including leadership or tech lead responsibilities
Strong proficiency in Python, REST APIs, SQL, and modern backend frameworks (Pyramid preferred)
Deep experience with PostgreSQL including schema design, performance tuning, and query optimization
Hands-on experience with AWS services such as EKS, Lambda, API Gateway, RDS, S3, and IAM
Strong understanding of microservices, serverless architectures, and distributed systems
Experience with Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and modern DevOps practices
Solid grasp of software engineering principles (SOLID, OOP, clean architecture) and security best practices (OWASP)
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across global teams
Exposure to healthcare or clinical data systems (HL7, FHIR, GxP) is a strong plus
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience)
