About the Role
As a Regional Underwriting Manager, you'll play a pivotal role in building and leading our underwriting team, developing our underwriting guidelines, and driving profitable growth. You'll be a hands-on leader, responsible for both managing a team of underwriters and contributing your own underwriting expertise. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the underwriting strategy of a rapidly growing Insurtech startup and make a real impact on the business.
Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development:
Recruit, train, mentor, and manage a team of production underwriters.
Foster a high-performance culture focused on accuracy, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Underwriting Strategy & Execution:
Develop, implement, and maintain underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures that align with the company's risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
Analyze data and market trends to identify opportunities for profitable growth and refine underwriting strategies.
Stay abreast of industry developments, emerging risks, and regulatory changes.
Production Underwriting:
Underwrite complex or high-value risks, demonstrating expertise in Worker's Comp
Review and approve underwriting decisions made by team members, ensuring adherence to guidelines and quality standards.
Manage relationships with brokers, agents, and other distribution partners.
Collaboration & Communication:
Work closely with the product, engineering, and data science teams to develop innovative insurance products and improve the underwriting process.
Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, providing clear and concise underwriting rationale.
Contribute to the development of a data-driven underwriting culture.
Compliance & Risk Management:
Ensure compliance with all relevant insurance regulations and company policies.
Monitor underwriting performance and identify areas of potential risk.
Implement controls and procedures to mitigate risks and ensure the quality of the portfolio.
Required Experience
Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field.
7+ years of experience in commercial lines underwriting, with a focus on Worker's Comp.
3+ years of experience in a leadership role.
Proven track record of developing and implementing successful underwriting strategies.
Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to assess complex risks and make sound judgments.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills.
Proficiency in underwriting systems and tools.
CPCU, ARM, or other relevant professional designations are a plus.
Nice-to-have
Experience working in a startup environment.
Familiarity with Insurtech and the use of technology in underwriting.
Experience with data analytics and predictive modeling.

Compensation: CompScience is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. The annual salary range for this role is $140,000 – $170,000. Compensation is determined within the range based on your qualifications and experience. Our total compensation package also includes equity and comprehensive benefits.
