This leadership role sits at the center of a high-performing mortgage underwriting organization, with a focus on jumbo loan production and complex credit scenarios. You will guide and develop a team of underwriters while ensuring adherence to agency guidelines, compliance standards, and internal service level agreements. The role combines hands-on underwriting expertise with coaching and operational oversight in a fast-paced lending environment. You will act as a key escalation point for complex loan decisions, ensuring accuracy, quality, and efficiency across the pipeline. Strong collaboration with production, compliance, and leadership teams is essential to maintain workflow balance and execution excellence. This position is ideal for a seasoned underwriting professional who thrives in a leadership and problem-solving capacity within a dynamic mortgage setting.

Accountabilities

Provide coaching, mentoring, and training to underwriters on guidelines, processes, systems, and credit decisions, escalating complex issues when needed
Serve as the primary escalation point for underwriting questions, loan-level scenarios, and complex or second-level file reviews
Ensure underwriting teams apply agency, compliance, and internal guidelines consistently across all loan decisions
Review and manage underwriting pipelines, reports, and exception tracking tools to ensure adherence to service level agreements
Conduct file spot checks, quality reviews, and post-closing or credit risk assessments to identify training needs and process gaps
Support workload balancing, priority loan assignments, and timely movement of files through underwriting stages
Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance evaluation, and ongoing team development activities
Collaborate with leadership on reporting, operational improvements, and special underwriting projects

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and professional experience
5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience across FHA, VA, and conventional loans with strong agency guideline knowledge
5+ years of underwriting leadership or supervisory experience
Active DE, SAR, and LAPP certifications required; USDA experience is a plus
Strong knowledge of ATR, QM, compliance, and disclosure requirements
Hands-on experience with Encompass loan origination system
Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills in complex credit scenarios
Excellent communication, coaching, and organizational abilities
Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, and Outlook
