About the role

This role will be responsible for executing new capital projects and troubleshooting existing processes as well as ensuring assigned projects are being completed on time and on budget. They will plan and coordinate technical activities to ensure they can complete projects within budget and in accordance to schedule, while following all policies, procedures, industry practices, and codes.


Who You Are 

  • Work closely with project originators and vested parties to understand the ultimate project goals, requirements and constraints and provide technical and engineering expertise to define project deliverables, scopes of work, work breakdown structures, essential resources, and projections of cost and schedule as required by Gevo’s stage-gate project development and approval process.
  • Oversight of all disciplines of design on the project, which may include, but are not limited to: material and energy balances, process modeling, PFD’s, P&ID’s, equipment specifications, process descriptions, process hazards analysis, plant layouts, general arrangement drawings, site civil design, foundations, structural steel, piping design, electrical design, and instrumentation & controls.
  • Review project cost estimates of different types and accuracies as required by the stage-gate approval process and project. The Project Engineer will be responsible for providing input for managing cost controls measures either individually or in collaboration with the Project Manager or other project team members. 
  • Support the project procurement process by reviewing equipment, materials, and services specifications or drawings. Reviewing and approving vendor submittals, qualifying vendors, and bid packages.   Procurement related responsibilities will include but are not limited to: specification validation, bid reviews, cost management, schedule oversight, fabrication/installation quality acceptance for Gevo. 
  • Monitor, collect and communicate key data to customers and to suppliers, working jointly to solve problems and develop effective partnerships.
  • Support Capital Projects Team by leading the review and development of equipment design, sizing, cost estimating, justification analysis, construction and installation supervision, construction walk-downs, check-out, start-up, commissioning, field engineering, RFI’s and documentation.  
  • Responsible for the development and training of associate level engineers and Operations staff personnel.
  • Support operations and process engineering as required, to ensure safe and efficient manufacturing processes are maintained (DCS support, other process control and monitoring systems, yield and energy improvement activities, continuous quality improvement activities).
  • Improve asset utilization (cycle time improvements, reduce working capital)
  • Understand, deploy and improve engineering standards consistent with Gevo’s policies and programs.
  • Support deployment and integration of new product processes and technologies.
  • Perform other duties as needed or directed by supervisor.

Requirements and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical/Mechanical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to define, develop, schedule, and track projects, including estimating and tracking project costs with plant operations groups or corporate customers. 
  • 10-15 years of leading multiple concurrent large capital projects ($20K to $10MM) in a chemical or process industry.
  • 3 years working at or supporting an operating facility.
  • Experience with OSHA Process Safety Management.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to adjust work hours and days to complete critical project tasks.
  • Excellent communication abilities.
