POSITION TITLE: Program Organizer: Black Organizing Programs

LOCATION:  Detroit                                

STATUS: Full Time, Exempt

Wage: $57,00 per year

Position Description

The Black Organizing program is Planned Parenthood’s national effort to work with Black communities on increasing involvement in sex education, sexual and reproductive health advocacy and increasing access care. Planned Parenthood of Michigan is seeking a program organizer to build sustainable, community-organizing teams in partnership with the Black communities. Successful candidates will ensure the centering of Black communities in the reproductive health and abortion access narrative, engage Black leaders and storytellers, and support communities to advocate for sexual and reproductive healthcare and abortion access.  The program organizer will build, expand and deepen relationships with partner organizations to ensure we are a part of and contribute to an inclusive and intersectional advocacy community.

 

Essential Functions:

Cross-functional Collaboration

●       Work in close coordination with Planned Parenthood’s national organizing team to engage and grow a base of Black supporters to build power for the reproductive health movement in their respective communities.

●       Align constituency program goals for black organizing with national (PPFA) and PPAM/PPMI goals.

●       Serves as a liaison to PPFA and other partner organizations as it relates to the purview of this position.

●       Collaborates with Regional Community Organizers to execute goals.

●       Provides onboarding and support for staff related to the implementation of programs under the purview of this position.

●       Works with Government Relations team to further cross-functional objectives.

●       Maintains currency in current legislative and electoral news.

 

Needs Assessments, Metrics, and Reporting

●       Implement data collection tools to identify and assess the needs of constituency groups including Black People

●       Build capacity for these constituency programs to contribute to the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of statewide supporter and Membership lists.

●       Manages, tracks, and reports on grants related to the constituency organizing programs under the purview of this position.

●       Develops measures of success and regularly monitors and reports on metrics.

●       Reviews progress of assignments with PPAM senior management.

 

External Relations & Volunteer Engagement

●       This position requires significant contact with the public and serves as the face of PPMI and PPAM in local communities.

●       Actively participates in identifying tabling, volunteer recruitment, public speaking, and other visibility opportunities and works with supervisor to prioritize those opportunities.

●       Responsible for directing activities of supporters and volunteers, volunteer engagement, and activities that support awareness and advocacy campaigns.

●       Builds, Implements and executes initiatives designed to recruit and increase the participation of Black supporters, volunteers, and activists in sexual and reproductive health advocacy

●       Maintain and build relationships with Black-led or centered partner organizations

●       Maintains relationships with vendors as it relates to the purview of this position.

●       Develops training and training materials related to the implementation of programs under the purview of this position.

●       Interprets, applies, and recommends changes to departmental policies and procedures where purposeful

●       Maintains currency in effective and efficient outreach and organizing campaign tactics and techniques.

●       Recruits, develops, and mobilizes volunteers for sexual and reproductive healthcare advocacy on abortion-related issues through SCOTUS fights, legislative sessions, and elections.

●       Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

●       Intermediate concepts, practices, and procedures used in effective and efficient community outreach activities and organizing campaigns designed to engage target audiences and move them to action.

●       Intermediate knowledge of Political issues impacting the mission of the organization.

●       Intermediate knowledge of Reproductive health issues impacting the organization's ability to further its mission.

●       Advanced knowledge of the reproductive justice framework and feminist principles.

●       Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications.

●       Intermediate Project Management

●       Operating standard office equipment and using required software applications, including Microsoft Office, Google, VAN, Every Action, Better Impact, Asana, BlueJeans, and others.

●       Data gathering and analytic techniques.

●       Intermediate Meeting facilitation and process management

●       Intermediate concepts, practices, and procedures used in political campaigning and organizing.

Qualifications and Experience

●       Two to five of relevant experience in Community or Field Organizing, Political Science, Social Justice and/or Community Engagement work, or related fields

OR

●       Any equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training approved by hiring decision makers.

Hours: Varied hours including evenings and weekends.

Working Environment: Work takes place mainly outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to walk long distances and be on your feet for several hours per day. Some office work will occur requiring sitting and typing or making phone calls.
