As a Principal Data Engineer, you will lead the design, implementation, and optimization of enterprise-scale data platforms and architectures. You will be responsible for building reliable, scalable data pipelines, ensuring data quality and governance, and enabling analytics and machine learning across the organization. This role combines hands-on engineering with strategic leadership, allowing you to influence company-wide data initiatives and collaborate with cross-functional teams. You will help translate complex business needs into robust data products while mentoring and guiding other engineers. This position offers the chance to make a tangible impact in a fast-growing, innovative environment.

Accountabilities

  • Define and maintain end-to-end data architecture, including lake/lakehouse/warehouse designs, batch/streaming pipelines, and metadata management.
  • Establish standards for schemas, contracts, orchestration, storage layers, and semantic/metrics models.
  • Design and implement scalable ELT/ETL and event-driven pipelines with reliable ingestion patterns (CDC, API, file, message bus).
  • Ensure data quality, lineage, and governance through SLAs, validation tests, anomaly detection, and incident runbooks.
  • Lead performance tuning, capacity planning, query optimization, and cost management for storage and compute resources.
  • Implement security and compliance best practices, including encryption, access controls, and regulatory alignment (SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA as applicable).
  • Enable analytics and ML by delivering versioned datasets/features, maintaining semantic layers, and operationalizing data for experimentation and BI.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, run design reviews, and guide trade-off decisions across data initiatives.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering, including 3+ years in a senior/staff/principal capacity.
  • Proven experience leading company-wide data architecture and platform initiatives.
  • Strong expertise in at least one cloud platform (AWS preferred) and modern warehouse/lakehouse technologies (Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks).
  • Proficient in SQL and one programming language (Python, Scala, or Java).
  • Experience with orchestration tools (Airflow, Dagster, Prefect), transformations (dbt or equivalent), and streaming platforms (Kafka, Kinesis, Pub/Sub).
  • Deep understanding of data modeling (3NF, star schema, data vault) and semantic/metrics layers.
  • Hands-on experience with data quality testing, lineage tracking, and observability in production environments.
  • Knowledge of security best practices: RBAC/ABAC, encryption, key management, and auditability.
  • Preferred: experience with feature stores, ML data operations, governance tools (DataHub, Collibra, Alation), cost optimization at scale, and compliance frameworks (SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA, PCI).

Benefits

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Retirement Plan (401k, IRA)
  • Life Insurance
  • Unlimited Paid Time Off & 9 Paid Holidays
  • Family Leave
  • Flexible Work From Home
