Position Description

Advanced Energy United (United) is currently seeking a Policy Principal to join our Decisionmaker Education and Engagement team (DMEE).

The DMEE team assists governors, state regulators, state energy office officials, and policymakers to better understand advanced energy products, services, and business models. Through conferences, business roundtables, and educational forums, United educates key stakeholders about the benefits advanced energy technologies and services can provide to customers and helps to solve the challenges in obtaining these benefits.

Reporting directly to the Policy Director, the Policy Principal will be responsible for strategizing, implementing, and managing state-level campaigns dedicated to ensuring key decision-makers are equipped with strategies to deploy affordable advanced energy solutions quickly to support their state’s economy.

The ideal candidate has exceptional project management, relationship building, and stakeholder engagement skills as well as an ability to quickly assess and act upon political dynamics that are affecting the energy sector. While you do not need to be a state energy policy expert to be successful in this role, strong candidates should possess an interest in—and working knowledge of—energy policy issues and be comfortable with communicating with decision-makers at a high level on United’s policy priorities. The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, proactive, comfortable with ambiguity, and flexible. Candidates will need to travel to meet with key stakeholders approximately 1-2 times per quarter.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Policy Director and DMEE team in developing and executing strategies for state-level regulatory and gubernatorial engagements.
  • Conduct in-depth research on state-specific energy outlooks, political landscapes, and stakeholders to inform strategic approaches.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including policymakers, advocacy groups, coalitions, industry experts, and regulators.
  • Represent United in front of decision-makers and communicate our policy priorities effectively.
  • Use project management tools and systems effectively to deliver success on both short and long-term goals.
  • Maintain and organize information to contribute to program knowledge management and retention.
  • Communicate campaign progress, outcomes, and key metrics for internal and external stakeholders, including United’s member companies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 4-6 years of professional experience, with at least some of that experience in policy analysis, campaigns, and/or policy advocacy.
  • Experience in the advanced energy industry or advocacy community is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn and navigate technical subject matter and to communicate key insights effectively to decision-makers.
  • Independent self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit; candidates must be very comfortable working with colleagues in a remote environment, creating new projects, managing their own calendar, and delivering on high expectations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required; candidates must be able to successfully develop and maintain productive relationships with key stakeholders, including policymakers, advocacy groups, industry experts, and regulators.
  • Existing relationships – or an ability to quickly build relationships – with senior leaders in the energy sector.
  • Experience managing confidential information and intelligence.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, required—inclusive of public speaking.
  • Entrepreneurial sensibility comfortable with high levels of ambiguity and fluidity.
  • Willingness to travel as needed (up to 25%).
