Summary

As the People Operations Leader at Hummingbird, you will set the strategic direction and oversee the execution of key HR functions, ensuring alignment with business objectives and scalability. This role is responsible for developing policies, frameworks, and strategies for employee lifecycle events, benefits and compensation, first-level employee support, employee relations, and compliance. You will work closely with Finance to ensure HR processes are scalable, cost-effective, and aligned with budgetary goals while driving operational excellence to support a growing workforce across all 50 states.

Top candidates demonstrate the ability to thrive in dynamic environments; startup experience or a penchant for embracing change is a big plus. Priorities for this role include development of Total Rewards and Compliance programs, and we are seeking candidates whose experience highlights these programs. Workday optimization experience strongly preferred!

Responsibilities

Employment Eligibility: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

FLSA Status: Exempt

Compensation: Starting at $179,000 - $233,000 per year less statutory deductions

Work Location: This position is remote. You must work from a location within the United States with consistent internet service.

Travel: 2-3 times/year for company events

HR Strategy and Service Model Development

  • Define and implement a scalable HR service delivery model that balances efficiency and employee experience.
  • Establish strategic priorities for HR operations, ensuring alignment with business needs and workforce demands.
  • Oversee the design and execution of HR technology, policies, and procedures that enhance service delivery.
  • Guide HR teams in developing innovative solutions that improve self-service capabilities and operational efficiency.

Benefits Strategy and Oversight

  • Set the strategic direction for employee benefits programs to support workforce well-being and market competitiveness.
  • Oversee the evaluation and selection of benefits offerings to ensure sustainability and alignment with business objectives.
  • Provide strategic recommendations on cost management and vendor partnerships for benefits administration.
  • Ensure ongoing analysis of market trends to maintain a best-in-class benefits program.
  • Partner with Finance to optimize benefit expenditures and ensure fiscal responsibility.

Compensation Strategy and Governance

  • Develop and oversee a comprehensive compensation strategy that ensures internal equity and market competitiveness.
  • Establish, implement, and oversee policies and frameworks for compensation structures, incentive programs, and pay equity analysis, ensuring effective execution and ongoing management.
  • Provide strategic oversight for compensation initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant labor laws and regulations while maintaining alignment with company culture and objectives.
  • Collaborate with Finance to align compensation strategies with budget and financial planning.

Policy Development and Compliance Leadership

  • Define and oversee HR policies that align with legal requirements, business strategy, and company values.
  • Ensure compliance with multi-state employment laws, proactively identifying risks and recommending policy updates.
  • Provide executive leadership with guidance on regulatory changes and their impact on workforce management.
  • Develop strategies to educate business leaders on compliance and policy adherence.
  • Work with Finance to align HR compliance strategies with overall risk management and budget planning.

Employee Relations and Culture Stewardship

  • Shape the company’s approach to employee relations, ensuring alignment with business goals and company culture.
  • Develop frameworks for handling complex employee relations matters while mitigating risk.
  • Equip functional and team leaders with guidance on navigating employee relations challenges.
  • Oversee initiatives that promote a positive, engaged, and compliant workplace environment.

Team Leadership

  • Lead your team to meet department and organizational goals.
  • Engage your team through 1-1s, team meetings, feedback, recognition, and clear communication.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to help team members embrace growth, develop new skills, and meet their personal and professional goals.
  • Perform management tasks including resource allocation, performance reviews, conflict resolution, and personnel management.

Required & Desired Skills

Required Skills and Experience

  • 5+ Years HR leadership experience, with deep expertise in HR strategy, benefits, compensation, and compliance.
  • Proven ability to set HR operational strategy and oversee large-scale implementations.
  • Strong understanding of multi-state employment laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience leading HR transformation initiatives that support business growth and scalability.
  • Executive-level communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience working closely with Finance to align HR initiatives with financial planning and budget constraints.
  • Expertise in total rewards strategy and workforce planning. Proven ability to develop and drive total rewards strategies and workforce planning initiatives, playing a key role in designing and executing comprehensive plans.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Experience in managed services or similar high-growth environments.
  • Familiarity with HR technology and systems, including Workday optimization at scale.
  • Track record of shaping employee relations strategies in complex organizations.
  • Experience in healthcare-related HR operations, particularly in patient access or remote healthcare service environments.
  • Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements specific to healthcare HR, including HIPAA and patient data security.
  • Familiarity with workforce management strategies for remote teams.
  • Experience optimizing HR processes in a highly regulated, service-oriented healthcare setting.
