This role is a key leadership position within revenue cycle operations, responsible for overseeing billing, verification of benefits, and financial counseling functions across a national behavioral health organization. You will ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency of insurance billing processes while driving improvements in cash flow and operational performance. Acting as both a strategic and hands-on leader, you will manage cross-functional teams and help standardize best practices across billing operations. The position requires strong analytical ability, operational discipline, and a deep understanding of healthcare billing workflows. You will collaborate closely with revenue cycle leadership and other departments to resolve issues and improve end-to-end financial processes. This is a high-impact role where leadership, process optimization, and data-driven decision-making directly influence organizational performance and patient access to care.


Accountabilities

In this role, you will oversee and optimize billing, verification of benefits, and financial counseling operations to ensure efficient revenue cycle performance and strong interdepartmental coordination. You will lead teams responsible for claims processing, charge entry, and financial documentation while ensuring compliance with established procedures and payer requirements.

  • Manage daily operations of billing, verification of benefits, and financial counseling teams across multiple functions
  • Ensure accurate charge entry, timely claims submission, and adherence to behavioral health coding and billing standards
  • Develop, implement, and refine billing policies, SOPs, and workflows to improve efficiency and reduce claim lag
  • Monitor key performance indicators such as clean claim rates, charge lag, and submission timelines
  • Analyze operational data to identify gaps, improve processes, and enhance revenue cycle performance
  • Collaborate with revenue cycle leadership to identify and resolve billing, authorization, and collections issues
  • Partner with Admissions and Utilization Review teams to streamline intake, authorizations, and financial documentation processes
  • Hire, train, and develop team members while ensuring productivity and quality standards are consistently met
  • Facilitate cross-departmental meetings to address operational challenges and drive alignment

Requirements

The ideal candidate brings strong healthcare billing expertise, leadership experience, and the ability to manage complex operational workflows in a fast-paced environment. You are highly analytical, detail-oriented, and comfortable using data to drive process improvements and team performance.

  • High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in Business or related field preferred
  • 5+ years of experience in medical billing, including at least 3 years in psychiatric or behavioral health billing
  • 2+ years of supervisory or management experience in billing or revenue cycle operations
  • Strong understanding of insurance billing processes, claims submission, and verification of benefits
  • Experience tracking KPIs and using operational data to improve performance outcomes
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • Ability to analyze complex billing issues and implement effective solutions
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proficiency in billing systems and healthcare revenue cycle tools
