About the Opportunity

At Skyven Technologies, we have developed a revolutionary heat pump technology to decarbonize industrial heat and move the needle on climate change. Our technologies have the potential to completely eliminate on-site CO2 emissions from industrial steam. We implement this technology through an innovative Energy-as-a-Service model that provides clean process heat to industrial facilities. We identify, fund, design, build, and install our cutting-edge, decarbonization technologies to help industrial manufacturers reach their sustainability goals, while minimizing their risk and reducing their operational expenses.

Industrial heat is responsible for roughly 20% of global CO2 emissions. That’s roughly equivalent to emissions generated by all transportation (including land, sea, and air) and is a compelling business opportunity – it will take an estimated $3.7 trillion in capital investment to decarbonize the sector by 2050. Skyven is at the forefront of this transformation and has recently been selected for a $145M investment from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to accelerate the deployment of our state-of-the-art Skyven Arcturus steam-generating heat pumps (SGHPs) at manufacturing facilities nationwide, revolutionizing how we address energy needs while combating climate change.

About the Role

We are looking for a Modeling and Simulation Engineer to join our team to support the deployment of Skyven’s scalable software for the design of industrial steam generating heat pumps. In this role you will develop physics-based software models to support the product development, sales, and solutions architecture teams in applications ranging from equipment sizing and selection to full-scale dynamic system performance modeling. The role requires a very strong background in thermodynamics as well as software development. This role is an individual contributor with the potential to grow into leading development of new software products in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, test and support internal MATLAB/Simulink tools to support engineering teams
  • Develop complex physics-based models in Simulink, including dynamic performance models for heat pumps
  • Enhance the functionality of existing and build new automation tools that accelerate the design process and selection of various heat pump hardware configurations
  • Interface with the controls team to migrate learnings from simulations to complex industrial controls systems
  • Build communications interfaces between Matlab and other data sources such as databases, PDM, and MRP systems to reduce manual data entry and improve automation
  • Package Matlab code for web deployment
  • Manage the codebase in a source control repository in a version control system
  • Develop and document rules, standards, and processes for the creation of code and automation tools

Requirements

  • B.S. in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, computer science or related engineering discipline
  • 3+ years of post-graduate experience in functional/physical model development in MATLAB and Simulink
  • Strong fundamentals in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, thermal and mechanical systems and ability to abstract fundamental concepts to first-of-kind systems
  • Experience in source code management in Git, Subversion, or similar software development platform
  • Experience in creation and development of steady state and dynamic physics-based models for thermo-mechanical systems to enhance the engineering design process

Preferred

All preferred listed below are intended to be above and beyond items to enable Skyven to build a diverse and broadly skilled team and are in no way intended to be a substitute for any of the requirements listed above.

  • M.S. or Ph.D in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, or computer science
  • Experience in front-end development (GUI) and deploying MATLAB apps on a MATLAB web app server
  • Expert in at least one other programming languages including Python, C++, VBA
  • Proficient in SQL and other database systems.
  • Data analysis and visualization experience.
  • Experience driving CAD, ERP, and MRP systems via modeling
  • Expertise in heat pumps, steam, and/or refrigeration systems application or design engineering
  • Experience in model-in-loop, software-in-loop, hardware-in-loop testing environments

Benefits

  • Base salary: $100,000 - $140,000
  • Stock options
  • Flexible PTO
  • Paid parental leave
  • Medical, dental, vision
  • 401k

Location

  • Fully remote; we are a remote first organization
  • Must live in and be authorized to work in the United States
  • No regular travel required; minimal travel expected for annual company meetings (<10%)
