The Role

The Mechanical Commissioning Specialist supports the planning, scheduling, and execution of full lifecycle commissioning for critical facilities. This role participates in MEP design reviews, leads functional testing of complex mechanical systems, and collaborates with engineers, contractors, vendors, and client teams to validate and optimize newly installed systems.


Working with limited day-to-day direction, the specialist independently executes commissioning activities and assists project leadership on complex assignments. The role operates in alignment with organizational goals, values, and departmental objectives.


What You'll Do

Perform On-site Commissioning Activities and Manage Projects (50%)

  • Conduct on-site inspections, validation, functional testing, troubleshooting, and verification of mechanical and controls systems using appropriate technical equipment.
  • Participate in factory witness testing and observe system startup activities.
  • Direct vendors and contractors during testing and commissioning activities.
  • Support timely, effective project delivery by identifying risks, developing mitigation strategies, and maintaining schedule and budget alignment.
  • Assist with project team onboarding, mobilization, and ongoing updates.

Develop Testing Plans and Procedures for Complex Projects (20%) 

  • Develop commissioning plans, pre-functional checklists, and functional performance test scripts for complex projects.

Review Construction Related Design Documents, Drawings and Specifications(15%)

  • Review shop drawings, submittals, and sequences of operations.
  • Support and participate in commissioning-focused design reviews

Reporting & Documentation (15%)

  • Contribute to project communications, progress reporting, and development of final commissioning reports.
  • Track and manage personal project hours using company tools.


What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction or related discipline or two years’ experience with installation, hands-on testing, validation and troubleshooting of mechanical and controls infrastructure. 
  • Minimum five years’ additional experience with installation, hands-on testing, validation and troubleshooting of mechanical and controls infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical and controls system principles.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite with excellent organizational and documentation skills.
  • High attention to detail with the ability to complete work accurately.
  • Strong analytical skills for preparing technical documents, reports, and correspondence.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, including client-facing interaction.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, managing multiple tasks, deadlines, and pressure.
  • Capable of planning and delegating work when needed.
  • Able to work effectively in both remote and on-site environments with strong self-motivation and proactive problem-solving.
  • Commitment to safety requirements and ability to obtain NFPA 70E and/or OSHA certifications.
  • Ability to leverage AI and emerging technologies to streamline workflows and improve operations


Physical Demands

This role requires frequent handling of small parts and tools, periods of stationary work, and movement through office, critical facility, and outdoor environments—including confined spaces and varying temperatures. The employee will regularly climb stairs and ladders and may occasionally need to position themselves under or over equipment or move items up to 50 pounds.


Travel/Relocation Requirements

  • Up to 75%, this may include travel to any or all 50 US states.
  • Must be located near a major airport. 
  • Effective May 7, 2025, and in accordance with U.S. federal regulations for domestic air travel, a valid REAL ID (or an acceptable alternative, such as a passport) is required for travel associated with this position.
  • Travel may involve transportation by car or plane depending on the destination and nature of the business need.
  • Travel is defined as physically leaving home on behalf of business activities including but not limited to client sites, meetings with other employees, meetings for business development purposes, running errands on behalf of the business, attending industry conferences, etc.
  • Potential relocation opportunities may exist per project needs.
  • International travel may be required based on individual skill, training and project needs.
