The Job
We are looking for an experienced Data Engineering Manager to drive our Data Engineering efforts. You will support a strong technical team of data engineers focused on data acquisition and our data warehouse pipelines.
You will design and implement the team’s workflow strategy, ensuring transparent and smooth flow of work from intake through delivery.
You will work with data engineering technical leads to ensure a clear tie between company goals and strategies and team OKRs.
This role sits within our Engineering department and will report directly to our Director of Data Management and Information Security.
Team Leadership and Development (25%)
Lead, mentor and coach a team of six Data Engineering professionals, fostering a collaborative environment.
Ensure team has measurable SMART goals (OKRs) and understands how these goals impact our company goals and strategies; hold yourself and team accountable for performance against these goals
Own workload management for the Data Engineering team, including intake, prioritization, resource allocation, and metrics
Own successful outcome and positive impact for critical large scale data engineering projects including project management, resource management and communication
Mitigate risks and clear blockers
Collaborate cross functionally to drive initiatives
Own team performance against established SLAs, including visibility into SLA adherence over time
Establish and provide visibility for metrics that will identify bottlenecks or other improvement opportunities
Own proactive communication of the team’s goals and accomplishments
Work closely with technical data engineering leads to establish a data engineering roadmap
Drive stakeholder alignment on roadmap and prioritization
Identify dependencies for successful completion of roadmap, coordinate with stakeholders to ensure dependencies are reflected on appropriate roadmaps
Tie company objectives back to team roadmap

Do you have the hands on experience in:

Project Management Expertise: You are skilled at breaking down large, sometimes ambiguous projects into milestones, keeping the team on track, and providing visibility into progress to stakeholders
Data Engineering Expertise: You have hands-on experience designing, building and testing data pipelines. You are familiar with Data Engineering best practices, processes and standards.
Data Architecture Experience: You are comfortable with data architecture and patterns for both structured and unstructured data.
Communication: You have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You excel at cross functional coordination and are able to build consensus. You would describe yourself as a good listener and are enthusiastic to learn from others.
Value Creation: You understand business needs, users, technology, and data, and collaborate with stakeholders to design and deliver data solutions that provide business value.
Problem-Solving: You demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a proactive approach to identifying issues and implementing effective solutions.
5+ years experience as a Data Engineer
3+ years experience as a people manager
Proficiency at successfully managing large scale data engineering projects
Hands on experience building data pipelines within a structured deployment environment
Experience with Agile project management
Familiarity with distributed systems like Spark, Kafka and data lakes
Experience with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure
Understanding of data modeling principles
Experience working with time series data
Renewable Energy Industry experience
Experience with Databricks
Experience with RDS
Understanding of challenges and best practices working with IoT data
Experience directly working with IoT Data Pipelines
Experience creating a medallion structure data warehouse
Knowledge of Data Governance and Security
Experience with Salesforce
Comfortable with object oriented programming languages such as Python
Comfortable with SQL
