Job Description

Forbes Advisor is looking for a lead editor with deep data engineering and automation expertise to help power our data-driven content. This role sits at the intersection of journalism, automation and data engineering—you’ll own the backend systems that make large-scale, trustworthy content possible.

This isn’t a traditional editor role. While strong editorial judgment and a journalist’s mindset are required, the core of the role is editorial automation, with data engineering as a key skill. You will build, maintain and scale the pipelines, automations and workflows that support content such as best-ofs, product reviews and rates coverage. You’ll operate within the Editorial Automation team, working closely with the Sr. Managing Editor to build content at scale. This role owns the automation layer that enables Forbes Advisor's data-driven journalism, from
data ingestion to publishing and monitoring.

Responsibilities:

• Own Editorial Automation Infrastructure
  • Own, build and maintain Python-based automation workflows that power daily, weekly and batch editorial content at scale.
  • Design and manage GitHub repos supporting automation.
  • Schedule and maintain GitHub Actions tied to data releases and publishing cadences (daily, weekly, monthly).
  • Ensure automation environments are production-ready, with correct credentials, dependencies and error handling.
  • Prepare clean, structured datasets for NLG platforms and data visualization tools.
  • Partner with editorial teammates to translate content needs into scalable solutions.
• Build & Maintain Data Pipelines
  • Create and maintain BigQuery tables.
  • Pull, normalize and validate data from APIs, spreadsheets, Tableau dashboards and internal data sources.
  • Develop reusable Python packages to standardize API access, authentication and workflow logic for the broader team.
  • Debug and resolve data or pipeline failures, serving as the escalation point for complex technical issues.
• Metrics, Reliability & Trust
  • Create workflows to log data usage, API credits, automation runs and template usage.
  • Build reporting and dashboards that monitor reliability and operational health of automation pipelines.
  • Support correction processes when vendors report errors or methodologies change.
  • Help ensure automated content meets Forbes Advisor’s standards for accuracy, transparency and editorial trust.
• Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Editorial, SEO, data research and engineering teams to identify and implement automation opportunities.
  • Help define best practices and standards for data journalism and content automation across teams.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to teammates working in less technical roles.

Qualifications:
This is a senior, systems-owning role. Candidates should be comfortable operating as both an
automation lead and a technical editor.

• 8–10+ years of experience in journalism, data journalism, data engineering or a closely related field.
• Advanced proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience building production-grade data pipelines.
• Strong experience with cloud data warehouses (BigQuery preferred).
• Hands-on experience with GitHub, version control and CI/CD-style workflows (including GitHub Actions).
• Experience working with APIs, authentication systems and third-party data providers.
• Strong understanding of data integrity, transparency and ethical considerations in journalism.
• Proven ability to operate independently, prioritize work and manage complex systems in a fast-moving environment.

Nice To Haves:

• Background in data journalism or newsroom environments.
• Experience with NLG platforms and large-scale content automation.
• Familiarity with data visualization tools and charting libraries.
• Experience designing analytics or monitoring systems for pipelines and automations.
• Comfort working in ambiguous, startup-like conditions within a larger organization.
