Overview
The Instructional Coach, English Language Arts (6–8) will be responsible for supporting and improving instructional practices in middle school ELA classrooms by collaborating with teachers to enhance lesson planning, instruction, and assessment. This position will primarily focus on literacy pedagogy, data-informed instruction, and adult professional learning, and be able to model best practices, provide individualized coaching, and ensure curriculum alignment with state standards to drive student achievement in English Language Arts.
Essential Duties
- Support and Improve Instructional Practices
- Collaborate with teachers to enhance lesson planning, instruction, and assessment.
- Model effective teaching strategies in classrooms (e.g., differentiated instruction, inquiry-based learning).
- Observe lessons and provide non-evaluative feedback.
- Facilitate Professional Development
- Design and lead workshops, learning communities, and training sessions tailored to school or district goals.
- Help teachers implement new curriculum standards, teaching tools, or instructional frameworks.
- Promote ongoing adult learning and reflective practice.
- Use Data to Drive Instruction
- Assist teachers in analyzing assessment data (formative and summative) to inform instruction.
- Guide teams in setting instructional goals based on student needs.
- Support data-driven decision-making during team meetings or PLCs (Professional Learning Communities).
- Provide Individualized Coaching and Mentoring
- Offer one-on-one or small group coaching tailored to each teacher's goals and areas of growth.
- Help new or struggling teachers with classroom management, instructional design, and student engagement.
- Build trust and maintain a collaborative, supportive relationship.
- Support Curriculum Implementation and Alignment
- Ensure curriculum fidelity and alignment with state or district standards.
- Help teachers unpack standards and plan units/lessons accordingly.
- Collaborate with school leaders to ensure horizontal and vertical alignment across grade levels.
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
- At least 3-5 years of successful ELA classroom teaching experience at the middle school level
- Deep knowledge of English Language Arts instruction, including reading and writing workshop models, STAAR readiness, and TEKS
- Proficiency in data analysis to guide instructional decisions
- Strong coaching and facilitation skills, with the ability to model lessons and lead collaborative planning
- Familiarity with curriculum design, assessment literacy, and instructional frameworks such as the Gradual Release of Responsibility or Balanced Literacy
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; able to build trust with diverse teacher teams
- Ability to support adult learners and promote a culture of continuous improvement
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities
- Proficiency with digital tools for planning, instruction, and data tracking
- Experience leading professional development, mentoring teachers, or facilitating PLCs (preferred)
Education & Certification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, or a related field is required.
- A valid Texas teaching certificate (with an endorsement in English Language Arts and Reading (4–8 or 7–12)).
- Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Leadership, or a related field would be preferred.
