About us: Duet empowers Nurse Practitioners (NP) to tackle the primary care crisis by leading their own practices, closing the gap in access while keeping care local. We're a well-funded seed-stage company led by experienced entrepreneurs and Nurse Practitioners, and backed by investors like Kairos HQ and Lerer Hippeau.

We’re building a vertically integrated platform for NP-led practices to thrive as standalone businesses in a time of corporate consolidation. Think of workflows to engage patients, streamline administration, forecast business growth, and drive value-based outcomes while building community among NPs. These solutions sit on a foundation of data that we harness across patients and providers for the benefit of care and practice success.

About the role: As Duet’s first Head of Data, you will own the end-to-end blueprint for how data is ingested, stored, governed, and served across our GCP-powered platform. Reporting to the Head of Strategy, you’ll split your time roughly 50/50 between hands-on data modeling and platform prototyping (Python familiarity is a plus but not required) and defining the strategic frameworks, standards, and processes that ensure our data estate scales securely and reliably.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect & Scale the Platform: Design, implement, and optimize our GCP-based data platform—spanning data warehouses, ETL pipelines, and deployment workflows—to ensure high availability, performance, and rapid data onboarding.

  • SQL-Centric Pipeline Development: Lead the design and tuning of complex SQL-based ETL/ELT processes (BigQuery, Cloud SQL, etc.), review teammates’ SQL and data-model pull requests, and partner with analytics engineers to expose clean, performant data marts.

  • Team Leadership & Hiring: Recruit, mentor, and grow a cross-functional engineering team (data, back-end, front-end). Establish clear career ladders, conduct regular 1:1s, and foster a culture of continuous learning and ownership.

  • Process & Delivery Management: Define and refine agile processes—sprint planning, code review standards, CI/CD pipelines, and incident response practices—to maintain high velocity without sacrificing quality or stability.

  • Strategic Planning & Execution: Collaborate with the Head of Strategy and CEO to translate quarterly objectives into technical roadmaps, set measurable OKRs, and drive execution across engineering and product.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Liaise with Product and Clinical teams to deeply understand customer needs; translate those into robust, scalable technical solutions and ensure seamless handoffs.

  • Quality & Reliability: Champion best practices around testing, monitoring, and alerting. Implement data validation and logging frameworks to ensure platform integrity and drive continuous improvement, while also ensuring flexibility and speed of deployment

  • Customer-Centric Advocacy: Serve as an engineering voice in customer conversations, using feedback to inform prioritization, anticipate scale challenges, and deliver delight at every touchpoint.

Qualifications:

Experience: 7+ years in software or data engineering roles, with ≥2 years leading small teams—preferably at an early-stage startup, with healthcare background

Technical Expertise:

  • Strong SQL skills; familiarity with data modeling and architecture. Demonstrated track record leading data-engineering teams, defining end-to-end data architecture and governance.

  • Cloud-Native & Infrastructure as Code: Hands-on experience with containerization (Docker) , plus infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Cloud Deployment Manager).

  • CI/CD Pipelines & Automation: Deep familiarity with building and maintaining automated build, test, and deploy pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions, Cloud Build).

  • Exposure to front-end frameworks (React/Vue) is a plus

Leadership & Culture: Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain top talent. Comfortable in a fast-paced, ambiguity-driven environment.

Communication: Exceptional collaborator who can align technical and non-technical stakeholders around ambitious goals.
