About the role
Remote, Full-Time. Provide fractional controller services to our farm and food business clients utilizing Good Roots' approach to managerial accounting. A more detailed list of duties is outlined below. Fractional Controllers often collaborate heavily with Good Roots Business Consultants to engage deeply with our clients to help them achieve and maintain financially sound and operationally resilient businesses. At times you may also find yourself working on more basic ongoing bookkeeping engagement. Additional duties outside of direct work on client projects can include, attending regular Good Roots Accounting Practice Area team meetings and All team meetings, participating in business development (scoping projects), perusing professional development, documenting and improving existing or new work processes and SOP's, and mentoring and providing thought partnership to junior colleagues.
*Limited travel required (2-4 times/year) to attend in-person All Team Gathering, client in-person visits and/or conferences.

What you'll do
- First 30 Days:
- Integrate with the team, understand Good Roots’ managerial accounting approach and values.
- Shadow on live projects to get your feet wet and begin to take on existing client projects where appropriate.
- Weekly trainings with your direct manager will help to orient you quickly.
- Days 31 to 60:
- Dive deeper into more complex client facing work
- Continue learning about our other core services by shadowing projects outside of accounting
- Establish health project management habits
- Days 61 to 90:
- Be capable of taking on the role of project lead in addition to support roles, learn how we approach business development and scoping projects.
- Fractional Controller Duties:
- Perform monthly accounting reviews to check for bookkeeping accuracy.
- Analyze monthly financial reports and hold regular accountability meetings with clients to help them interpret their numbers .
- Develop and oversee financial controls and accounting processes to improve financial clarity and performance. This can include:
- Preparation and presentation of detailed financial reports to business stakeholders
- Set up and maintain 13-week rolling cash flow tool
- Conducting weekly or monthly accountability meetings with clients.
- Collaborate with clients to set financial management priorities.
- Work with our clients’ bookkeepers on accounting system improvement projects such as accrual accounting practices, accounting workflows for sales/operations, inventory accounting, margin analysis, labor tracking, etc.
- Educate and train clients on financial systems and business processes via virtual platforms.
- Collaborate with our Business Consultants on projects to provide:
- Bookkeeping support for consulting projects.
- Advanced analyses of accounting-related subjects.
- Development and implementation of complex accounting processes.
- Bring accounting expertise to nonprofit clients, including:
- Expense tracking by fund source/donor, program, and restrictions.
- Grant tracking and reporting, including payroll allocations, program activities, and available fund balances.
- Coaching nonprofit clients on managing budgets and grant funds.
- Collaborating on grant writing regarding the financial implications of grant applications.
Who you are
- Proven senior-level experience in accounting: Principles, theory, and application. Specific expertise in QuickBooks Online.
- Minimum of three years of QuickBooks experience, QBO ProAdvisor certification preferred (required post-hire).
- Tech Savvy: Highly proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Zoom, Slack, and project management software.
- Process Improvement: Strong ability to learn from, follow, and develop written procedures for internal work and as resources for clients.
- Analytical: Fearlessly determined to dig into clients’ books, determine the appropriate courses of action in collaboration with team members, and educate clients on better processes appropriate for their level of understanding.
- Project Management: Capable of efficiently and decisively managing a multitude of client projects, team needs, and competing priorities.
- Project Design: Skilled in matching services to clients’ needs and skills while supporting their continuous improvement and empowerment.
- Management Functions: Well-versed in all core areas of management, including planning, organizing, staffing, accountability, and leadership.
- Emotionally Intelligent: Exemplary skills related to self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in the farming and agriculture industry.
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
- Firm understanding of GAAP; CPA preferred.
- Nonprofit controllership experience.
- Understanding of nationwide sales tax and payroll processes.
