This senior leadership role oversees end-to-end payroll operations within a large, complex organization, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely execution of all payroll processes. You will lead payroll teams responsible for bi-weekly, year-end, and supplemental payroll cycles while safeguarding the integrity of payroll tax filings and reconciliations. The role requires close collaboration with HR, Finance, and other internal stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of benefits, system updates, and regulatory changes into payroll operations. You will serve as a key technical authority for payroll compliance, supporting internal controls and ensuring adherence to federal, state, and local requirements. In addition to operational oversight, you will drive continuous improvement, team development, and process optimization across payroll functions. This is a highly impactful leadership position within a regulated, mission-driven environment where precision and accountability are critical.


Accountabilities:

Lead and direct the day-to-day payroll operations, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely processing of all payroll activities, including bi-weekly, supplemental, and year-end payroll cycles.

  • Oversee payroll tax filings, W-2 preparation, and regulatory reporting to ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Manage and develop payroll teams, including staffing, coaching, performance management, training, and organizational planning.
  • Partner closely with HR and Finance to resolve payroll, benefits, and system-related issues and ensure seamless data integration across platforms.
  • Establish, maintain, and enhance payroll policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and ensure audit readiness.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives and working groups to improve payroll processes, systems, and operational efficiency.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on payroll compliance, staying current with regulatory changes and industry best practices.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts, leveraging data and system capabilities to optimize payroll accuracy and performance.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, human resources, or a related field from an accredited institution.

  • 5+ years of experience managing payroll operations in a large, complex organization, including multi-state and high-volume payroll environments.
  • Proven experience leading payroll teams, including hiring, performance management, and staff development responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll systems, payroll processing, and HR integration processes.
  • Experience with federal, state, and local tax filings and payroll compliance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls, audit requirements, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across HR, Finance, and operational teams.
  • Preferred: CPP certification, master’s degree, and experience with systems such as Workday or UKG, ideally in healthcare or nonprofit environments.
