The Role

The Director of Human Resources will build the people systems, practices, and culture that enable Karoo to scale quickly without losing what makes it special. This leader will be responsible for recruiting infrastructure, performance management, manager enablement, compensation frameworks, and employee experience, while deeply understanding the unique needs of care delivery teams vs. business and technology teams in a digital health environment.

This is a hands-on, self-directed role. To start, you will be Karoo’s most senior HR leader and will be expected to both set the strategy and do the work. Success requires independence, strong judgment, and comfort operating in ambiguity.

What You'll Do

Culture & Employee Experience

  • Intentionally shape Karoo’s culture as the company grows, preserving trust, clarity, and mission alignment across teams.
  • Design employee experience practices that support clinicians delivering care, operators running markets, and product/engineering teams building technology.
  • Build feedback loops (surveys, check-ins, manager input) that surface engagement and retention risks early.
  • Partner with leadership to reinforce values  as the organization scales.

People Systems & Infrastructure

  • Build and maintain scalable HR systems and processes across onboarding, performance management, feedback, and employee lifecycle management.
  • Design policies that meet compliance requirements without importing unnecessary corporate bureaucracy.
  • Oversee HRIS, benefits administration, payroll coordination, and HR vendor relationships.
  • Ensure people operations are reliable, well-documented, and ready to scale as headcount grows.

Talent Acquisition Across Diverse Teams

  • Oversee recruiting processes that support high-volume, high-quality hiring across clinical and corporate functions.
  • Partner with leaders on workforce planning, role design, and hiring strategies aligned with growth plans.
  • Improve candidate experience while maintaining a high bar and efficient time-to-hire.

Performance Management & Manager Enablement

  • Design and implement performance management frameworks that drive a culture of accountability and performance.
  • Coach managers on feedback, development, performance improvement, and difficult conversations.
  • Support leaders through sensitive employee relations issues with empathy, consistency, and sound judgment.
  • Build clear role expectations, growth paths, and leveling frameworks that support retention and development.

Compensation, Benefits & Equity Design

  • Partner with leadership to design compensation bands and leveling frameworks that account for labor markets and technical talent competition.
  • Evaluate and evolve benefits offerings to support frontline care teams and distributed knowledge workers.
  • Ensure compensation practices are equitable, compliant, and aligned with Karoo’s values.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws across a multi-state, remote, and clinical workforce.
  • Manage employee relations issues, investigations, and terminations in a fair, consistent, and legally sound manner.
  • Maintain up-to-date policies and documentation as the company grows in size and complexity.

What We're Looking For

  • 8–10+ years of HR experience, with direct experience in digital health or healthcare technology.
  • Proven track record scaling a startup from Series A to Series B/C or beyond.
  • Deep understanding of the differences between care delivery teams, business operations, and technology teams, and how to support each effectively.
  • Comfortable operating as the sole senior HR leader, able to both design systems, execute independently, and build a high performing HR team underneath you.
  • Strong working knowledge of multi-state employment law and healthcare-adjacent compliance considerations.
  • Empathetic, pragmatic, and highly organized, with excellent judgment and communication skills.

Why Join Us

  • Competitive salary and equity.
  • Fully-remote work environment available.
  • Full benefits package.
  • A collaborative and transparent company culture that values creativity and ownership.
