The Director, Major Gifts will play a critical role in advancing philanthropic strategy by cultivating and managing relationships with high-net-worth donors and family offices. This position is responsible for executing multi-year major gifts plans, securing significant contributions, and aligning donor engagement with organizational priorities. The role requires strategic thinking, expert relationship management, and the ability to inspire confidence with executive leadership and high-profile donors. Success in this position is measured by the growth of major gift revenue, portfolio expansion, and the development of lasting partnerships. The Director will collaborate across departments to integrate donor strategies and ensure consistent, mission-driven communication. This role requires domestic travel, a results-oriented mindset, and strong leadership capabilities.


Accountabilities:
  • Lead and execute major-gifts fundraising strategy aligned with organizational goals.
  • Build and manage a growing portfolio of 25–50 high-value donors, expanding to 100–150+ over time.
  • Secure gifts ranging from $10K–$1M, with an emphasis on unrestricted and strategic support.
  • Develop and implement moves management plans to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors.
  • Coordinate with executive leadership, board members, and key stakeholders to advance strategic partnerships.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams including Programs, Marketing, Communications, and Philanthropic Strategy to ensure aligned donor engagement.
  • Maintain accurate donor records in Salesforce or comparable CRM systems and provide reporting, forecasting, and analytics.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • 7–10 years of experience in major gift fundraising, preferably in a national or international nonprofit organization.
  • Demonstrated success securing five- and six-figure gifts from individuals and managing complex donor portfolios.
  • Experience partnering with senior executives and volunteer leadership on high-level fundraising strategy.
  • Strong interpersonal, storytelling, and communication skills to build trust and inspire donor confidence.
  • Proficiency with Salesforce or similar CRM platforms and strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring fundraising staff.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in donor engagement and team culture.
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically up to 40%; occasional international travel possible.
