In search of…you!

If you have an ear for rhythm, an eye for strategy, a mind for research, and a stomach for revision…if you love to read and love to write and love to write about what you read…if you enjoy finding the right words for big ideas, and building trusted relationships with leaders in business, philanthropy, and culture…we’d love to hear from you!

Who we are:

West Wing Writers is a strategic communications firm that helps leaders, organizations, and brands shape the most important conversations happening today. We’re veterans of the White House and Capitol Hill; of TV writers’ rooms and prestige publications; of leading nonprofits and top comms shops. We’re authors and commentators, teachers and journalists, humorists and historians. And all of this finds expression in our writing.

West Wing Writers specializes in the development, expression, and amplification of ideas in the private, public, and nonprofit sectors: helping good ideas get heard, good organizations lead meaningful change, and good people make a difference in the world.

We’re an employee-owned business, a structure that reflects our people-centered values and our team-driven approach. We are builders: passionate about our craft, our culture, and the company we are shaping and growing together.

Application notes:

We do not use AI to review applications; every candidate is evaluated by at least one person. We want to see how you think and write—so please do not use generative AI for any part of your application.

The final deadline for applications is June 15 at 12:00 pm ET. You can expect to hear back from us via email by June 30. During the next phase of the selection process, we will test your writing skills and client communication skills.

Your role:

As a Director, you’ll be at the forefront of diverse writing, editing, research, and consulting projects: whether it’s crafting a soaring commencement address or diving deep to understand the state of a particular industry, researching and writing an op-ed or coaching clients before a big presentation. As a trusted advisor, strategic thinker, talented writer, diligent researcher, and proven project manager, you’ll devise and deliver high-quality strategic counsel and client-ready drafts, and ensure excellence in every project.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Deeply understanding and tracking client industries, issues, and strategic priorities;
  • Collaborating with teammates to deliver exceptional work;
  • Writing, editing, and submitting creative, client-ready drafts with minimal guidance;
  • Proactively contributing actionable and strategic ideas to client accounts;
  • Executing client projects with limited supervision;
  • Working with multiple clients, simultaneously, with excellence;
  • Contributing to business development by delighting clients, earning repeat business, and deepening relationships with longtime clients and new ones.

Requirements

  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of relevant professional writing and/or communications experience;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills;
  • Experience managing multiple projects at once, while meeting deadlines;
  • Outstanding relationship-building skills that foster trust and collaboration with clients and colleagues alike;
  • Eagerness to work with a range of clients—corporate, philanthropic, nonprofit, political—across a range of sectors and assignments;
  • Creativity, curiosity, thoughtfulness, proactivity, dependability, and professionalism;
  • Ability to accept, internalize, and implement feedback;
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Additional job requirements: This is a full-time position with general working hours from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. Given the nature of client service and communications, some evening hours and weekend work will be required.
  • Office Culture: We are largely remote with hubs in New York and Chicago; staff in these locations get together once a week in a co-working space.

Benefits

  • Salary: $90,000-$120,000, depending on experience;
  • Full individual coverage of health, dental, vision, and life insurance;
  • 15 vacation days to start (with an additional day added for each year of service, up to 20 days per year), 15 paid holidays, 10 sick days, and 2 discretionary days;
  • 12 weeks of paid parental leave;
  • 3% safe harbor contribution;
  • Participation in our Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).
