About the role:

The Design Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, development, and documentation of control systems for industrial, mechanical, and building automation applications. This role prepares control drawings, system architecture, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, device schedules, and project documentation across pre-construction, installation, and closeout phases.

Working under the direction of Senior and Lead Design Engineers, the Design Engineer translates project requirements into accurate, constructible design packages, coordinates with internal project teams, and contributes to drawing quality, documentation accuracy, and design standardization.

Key Responsibilities:

Technical Design & Project Execution

  • Support the design and development of DDC and PLC-based control systems, including control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, schematics, and network architectures.
  • Prepare submittal drawings for control systems based on engineering plans, equipment submittals, project specifications, and sequence of operations requirements.
  • Develop control system documentation, including network architecture drawings, flow diagrams, valve and damper schedules, I/O summaries, device schedules, and detailed wiring diagrams.
  • Assist with control panel design documentation, including component layouts, enclosure details, power distribution, and field device connections.
  • Interpret mechanical, electrical, and process drawings to support coordinated control system designs.
  • Generate project O&M closeout documentation and as-built updates from construction redlines.
  • Ensure assigned design deliverables are accurate, complete, organized, and submitted according to project schedules.

Project Coordination & Collaboration

  • Coordinate with Project Managers, engineers, programmers, panel shop teams, field teams, vendors, contractors, and customers as needed to support project execution.
  • Generate RFI documentation when required to clarify design requirements, resolve missing information, or support coordination between project stakeholders.
  • Escalate technical challenges, scope concerns, design conflicts, or schedule risks to Senior or Lead Design Engineers as appropriate.
  • Communicate project status, open design items, documentation needs, and schedule considerations clearly and professionally.
  • Support commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting activities by providing accurate design documentation and technical information as needed.

Quality Standards & Continuous Improvement

  • Maintain alignment with Divcon drawing standards, CAD practices, templates, and project documentation requirements.
  • Perform self-checks of assigned drawings, documentation, and design packages before review by Senior or Lead Design Engineers.
  • Support QA/QC review processes by incorporating feedback, resolving comments, and updating design documentation accurately.
  • Assist with the creation and improvement of drawing blocks, templates, customer standards, and workflow improvements to increase consistency and efficiency.
  • Maintain organized project documentation, revisions, redlines, and design records throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related technical field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or other relevant drafting/design software.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, control theory, DDC controls, PLC-based control systems, or building automation systems.
  • Experience developing or supporting control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, network architecture drawings, I/O summaries, and control system documentation.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, sequences of operation, mechanical/electrical drawings, and equipment submittals.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, time management, and accountability for assigned deliverables.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, project management, field operations, vendors, and customers.

Experience

  • 2–5 years of experience in controls design, DDC controls, building automation systems, electrical design, industrial automation, or related field.
  • Experience preparing control drawings, submittals, closeout documentation, or construction documentation preferred.
  • Experience coordinating with project teams and supporting multiple projects or deadlines with moderate supervision.
  • Familiarity with applicable codes and standards such as NEC, NFPA, or UL 508A preferred.
  • Familiarity with Rockwell Automation / Allen-Bradley platforms, Revit, Bluebeam, or other design/documentation tools preferred.
  • Experience with industrial or mission-critical systems, including HVAC, chiller plants, process systems, or data centers, preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sit and/or stand for extended periods (typically 6-8 hours per day) while performing computer-based tasks and facility support tasks.
  • Use hands and fingers to operate standard office equipment, including computers, keyboards, mice, telephones, scanners and printers.
  • Occasionally stand, walk, bend, stoop, or reach to access filing cabinets, retrieve documents, or attend meetings.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull light objects and materials weighing up to 20-25 pounds (e.g., boxes of files or office supplies).
  • Have sufficient vision (with or without correction) to read computer screens, printed documents, and small print; and sufficient hearing to communicate effectively by phone and in person.
  • Work in a typical indoor office environment with moderate noise levels from office equipment, conversations, and occasional interruptions.
