We are seeking a highly skilled Backend Engineer to design, develop, and maintain scalable systems for ingesting, processing, and managing diverse healthcare data sources. This role focuses on building secure, high-performance backend services that support real-time analytics, AI-driven insights, and patient-centered care pathways. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including product, clinical, and AI teams—to ensure backend capabilities align with user-facing experiences and healthcare workflows. This position offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, solving complex challenges in data integrity, compliance, and system scalability while contributing to cutting-edge healthcare technology.

Accountabilities:

  • Design and implement scalable backend services for health data ingestion, transformation, and storage (wearable streams, EHRs, and user inputs).
  • Build and maintain secure APIs and data pipelines for real-time and batch processing, ensuring integrity and compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory standards.
  • Integrate with external health systems and devices, including FHIR APIs, BLE-based wearables, Apple HealthKit, and Google Fit.
  • Ensure backend services achieve high availability, reliability, and low latency to support clinical decision-making.
  • Collaborate with product, clinical, AI, and security teams to align backend development with user-facing applications and regulatory requirements.
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, observability tooling, automated testing, and monitoring to maintain system quality and reliability.
  • Mentor and support engineering teammates on secure coding practices, data handling, and backend architecture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience delivering end-to-end software products, including design, architecture, implementation, and deployment.
  • Strong backend development skills in Python (FastAPI, Flask, Django) and experience with distributed systems, microservices, and asynchronous workflows.
  • Solid database experience with PostgreSQL or MySQL and familiarity with Kafka or similar event-streaming systems.
  • Experience building dashboards, admin tools, or internal applications with modern frontend frameworks (React, Next.js, Tailwind) is a plus.
  • Proficiency in CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, containerization, and cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Familiarity with secure service communication, OAuth2, TLS, encryption, and regulatory compliance (HIPAA, HITRUST, FDA 510(k)).
  • Understanding of healthcare data standards such as FHIR and HL7, including parsing, composing, and secure data exchange.
  • Excellent programming fundamentals, test architecture (PyTest, Hypothesis, Locust), and observability practices.
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Bonus Skills:

  • Experience with Java, Rust, or other JVM-based languages.
  • Background in clinical workflows, remote patient monitoring, or population health management.
  • Experience with data warehousing, analytics platforms, or data lakes for longitudinal health data.
