This role plays a key leadership part in ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of financial reporting within a large public sector education environment. It oversees full-cycle accounting operations, including month-end and year-end close processes, financial reporting, and audit preparation, while reinforcing strong internal controls and adherence to GAAP and GASB standards. The position also provides direct supervision and development of accounting staff, supporting both operational excellence and professional growth. It requires close collaboration across finance and campus departments to ensure efficient and accurate financial processes. The Assistant Director contributes to continuous improvement efforts, particularly in strengthening ERP systems and accounting workflows. This is a hands-on leadership role that blends technical accounting expertise with people management in a mission-driven academic setting.


Accountabilities:
  • Lead day-to-day general accounting operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and GASB standards.
  • Supervise and develop accounting staff, including hiring input, training, performance evaluations, coaching, and daily oversight.
  • Manage full-cycle accounting processes, including month-end and year-end close activities and annual financial reporting.
  • Oversee preparation and support of external financial audits, including schedules, documentation, and footnotes.
  • Ensure strong internal controls are implemented, documented, and consistently followed across accounting operations.
  • Support and drive continuous improvement initiatives, including accounting policies, procedures, and process enhancements.
  • Strengthen ERP system usage and contribute to system optimization and data integrity across financial operations.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to ensure accurate, efficient, and compliant financial processes across the organization.
  • Support timely reporting and provide financial insights to leadership and stakeholders as needed.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned, including extended hours during audit periods when required.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or equivalent combination of education and relevant accounting experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible accounting experience in government, public sector, or higher education environments.
  • Strong knowledge and practical application of GASB standards and public sector financial reporting requirements.
  • Experience with full-cycle accounting, including month-end close, reconciliations, and audit preparation.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and experience working with accounting systems and ERP platforms (Workday preferred).
  • Understanding of internal controls, compliance standards, and financial governance frameworks.
  • Strong leadership skills with experience supervising, training, and developing accounting staff.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced, multi-fund environment.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
  • High level of integrity, confidentiality, and commitment to ethical financial practices.
